BRICS vs Trump: Who Is the Real “Sucker”?
VON GREYERZ partner Matthew Piepenburg joined Jay Martin, Andy Schechtman, and Taylor Kenny at the recent VRIC conference in Vancouver, Canada, to discuss the rising tensions between the new Trump administration and the BRICS+ coalition.
Jay opens with the broad question, “Will the BRICS survive the Trump presidency?”. The shared view is a blunt “yes, and it won’t be pretty…”
Key to the discussion is understanding the perspectives from both sides of the BRICS vs Trump “debate.” Trump has famously warned that the US will not be the “sucker” to the rising BRICS/US trade imbalance, the off-shoring of US productivity, growing national security threats and the clear move away from the “mighty” USD by the BRICS+ nations.
On the flip-side, the BRICS are equally tired of being the “sucker” to exported inflationary policies from the US, unfair loans from the IMF and World Bank and an increasingly weaponized USD.
Here, the panel discusses which side is the bigger “sucker” and how policies and reactions can or could play out in the years ahead in a setting of tariff threats, de-dollarization and increasing signs of mutual distrust, tension and trade wars/policies.
